"Many
years ago, there was a village that rested half way up a mountain,
topped with overstretching spines of petrified trees. Songs and chants
were performed in honor of these trees. It was said that the sharp
spines would cut open the clouds as they passed over, releasing the rain
to pour down the canyons to awaiting farmland below. One day the Earth
shook and the forest of spines fell on top of one another. Once the
Earth stood still, the shaman climbed to the top of the canyon and was
heartbroken to see his beloved trees thrown to the Earth that created
them. The Shaman danced a mournful dance and cursed the spirits for
this misfortune. Now, how would the fields be watered? Many months passed
with frequent visits from the Shaman and still the rains did not come.
One day the Shaman climbed back up the hills once more prepared to fight
with the spirits that cast this burden on them. As he reached the top
of the summit, the sun was beginning to set and a mirage of shadows
blended across the fallen trees. Then a giant eagle appeared soaring
through the sun creating a strong gust that rushed through the canyon
knocking the Shaman to his back. Not sure what it meant the Shaman
camped out that night below the peak of the eagle awaiting another sign.
The next morning the entire village awoke to farm lands covered in
snow. Something even the elders could never recall happening. As for the
Shaman, his spirit left him during the night in the bitter cold. His
tale would live on, as elders talked of the day that the Earth shook and
opened the valley for the winds of the eagle to bring moisture to the
village year-round instead of having to gouge its way across the peaks.
It is said that during this time of year, when the days are warm but
night's bring bitter cold, if you climb to the top of the mountain you
can see the Shaman's mirage. "
